Black & White
When the light is hard and the colors are washed out it is time to play with contrast, texture and shade. Sometimes less is more and I find that to be the case with this type of photography. It is said, that where painting is the art of inclusion, photography is the art of exclusion. By this measure, Black & White photography takes this a step further by removing color altogether. By constraining ourselves this way we are forced to focus mercilessly on that which is the point of the photograph. Texture, light or shape? It must be decided and executed very well - or else it is just a picture that does not have color and misses it. Done well, some say this is the epitome of exclusion in photography and therefore the purest form of photography. I am a bit more pragmatic in my approach and believe colors or the lack of them has a time and a place and that the skilled photographer understands when to choose which.
