Making portraits is an art and about the person, despite many photographers spending more time discussing lens choice instead of interview technique. Portraits are great if they illustrate an aspect of the portraitee's personality or mannerism. Photographing events may yield nice photos but rarely any good portraits because I don't know the subject and don't know how to bring out the particular quality that would make a picture "so you". This is one reason a photo session for a portrait may take up to hours and yield 5 or 8 pictures whereas an event may take the same amount of time and yield 120 finished pictures. The good portrait is timeless and speaks to the viewer. Even if you don't know the person on the portrait, you should feel like you got to know them a little by looking at their portrait.
